Guidance Department: At Your Service!

In today’s world, skilled tradespeople are in demand. Dean Tech is proud to continue our commitment to our students and community by providing a path to in a career in industry. You might even decide on pursuing military service, or continuing on to college. Whether you are about to begin your freshman year, already in high school and want to gain practical job skills and training along with a good education, or just beginning to think about a return to the classroom, we welcome all students who are interested in achieving success in work and in life.

Our Guidance department gives you the steps you need to get started on your technical career and to push you through it until the end. Each counselor is assigned to a student based on shop and freshmen homerooms. Mrs. Palacios, the secretary, makes appointments to see parents of incoming freshmen and allows students to enter and see their appointed counselor for class schedules, scholarships, get started with credit recovery and even moral support.

Guidance Helps for the Future

Although Dean offers experience in career/ technical training, we also offer students the opportunity to go to college after graduation instead of going straight into a career. Most students are able to attend college and hold a job related to the vocation that was taken

The Guidance Department allows students to  get ready to plan for college at www.yourplanforthfuture.org. Once the students go into their senior year, the staff gets them started for college by applying for Financial Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The staff also gives students the chance to plan for their career by providing a website which is www.careercruising.com.

Back-On-Track Opportunities:
Extra Help

Extra-Help/Office Hours
For students who are preparing for a test or have trouble understanding a particular subject, Dean offers office hours each day after school for different subjects. Guidance holds all office hours for each teachers' day. This gives a different way of understanding the information presented in class. Teachers can see student on days that works best for them even if its not the appointed day for office hours.

MCAS Tutoring
Every year, freshmen and sophomores take the MCAS test given by the state. To complete high school and receive a diploma, students must pass this test. However some students doubt their capability of doing well during the test. The Guidance Department offers MCAS Tutoring to those students who feel that they are in need of better preparation in Science, Mathematics, and/or English Language Arts.

Back-On-Track Opportunities:
Credits

Credit Retention
There's always hope for students who are currently failing a class. Students can sign-up for credit retention in order to bring up your failing grade from the first semester. Using the Plato Learning Computer System, they can work their way up to a passing grade. This also enables students to work at home! Guidance counselors sign students up when their grades are in jeopardy.

Credit Recovery
Every year there is at least a few students who have failed a class in the past. Dean gives students the helping hand by having them sign up in Guidance for Credit Recovery in order to earn credit for the class(es) failed. Like Credit Retention, it can be done at home using Plato Learning Computer System so students can get back on track with their credits.
