The fields of health occupations are rapidly expanding and changing. The Health Services Assistant Program at Dean Technical High School prepares students to complete a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or as a Home Health Aide (HHA) which opens up many job opportunities to successful graduates. Students learn the fundamentals of health by exploring such areas as anatomy and physiology, nursing, medical terminology, ad early childhood development. The classroom lab experience is enhanced by clinical practice.

Competencies Students Obtain

The Health Services career path enable students to leave high school with knowledge and specific expectations of their future. The field is predicted to have a much higher than average job growth over the next decade. A two-year or four-year degree is required to become a nurse. Registered nurses must also pass a national licensing examination. When students leave they obtain the knowledge of:

  • Managing Stress
  • Using Body Mechanics
  • Administering
  • Personal Hygiene
  • Administering Comfort Measures
  • Monitoring Vital Signs
  • Implementing Safety Measures
  • Assisting the Feeding Program
  • Assisting with Nutritional Needs

Career Outlook and Opportunities

As a starting registered nurse, students can expect to earn approximately $31 per hour and/ or $65,000 per year. College encourages students to persue this path with classes since the demand for nurses, and doctors are always high. Leaving high school, graduating seniors earn their certification in this field along with their diploma. Even more-so, career opportunities open up to them as well:
